十一月初，累到請了一天的遁隱假。剛巧OCPS的grant department打電話來學校，說是要送獎來。副校長跟Sejal要我的手機號碼，來確定我隔天上班，卻又小曝一下的說是有當時不能揭露的事。

隔天第六節果真來了。我預測了幾個有關』不能揭露』的可能性，這是其中一個。學生比我意外得多。我當然也很雀躍真的拿到跟Progress Energy申請的$3,000，卻小小不解為何如此鄭重。Dr. 『Education』向學生宣佈說我拿了最高分。呵呵，破英文拿了資助金申請書的最高分 ? 交稿後還伊媚兒要我修正幾處 ? 莫非我的做法最傻最紮實 ?

一共將近兩百五十人拿到資助金，OCPS online 登了三個老師的照片，我是其中一個。很遲緩很勉強的參加了在Science Center的頒獎晚會，才又發現我那張在教室受獎，有校長在內，拿一張大大的假支票的照片，居然是節目單上的』主題』照片。意外的在無人注意的圈圈裡大出風頭 !! 讓我以』八雷武姿』自轉三圈，自愉一下。    :  )

(今天是Thanksgiving Week 的美妙開始，放任我的狗 Sam 在後院的落葉與散撒枝葉間的秋陽下盡情奔跑，當她想當的小鹿….  : )  她正在後院奔跑，像羚羊般跳躍 )

暑假前兩個月 學生開始決定明年選課 雖然現在辦法已改為無把關選課方式 基本上還是有些功力的學生來選修 有些honors Physics(進階物理)快被當死的也來討好的告知』我選了AP Physics 你教的 是吧?』 (Advanced Placement Physics,– 即大學程度的物理) 差點讓我給當場敲腦袋

Even during intra-party primaries, some people have been reported to have lost lives. The good thing is that Ghanaians by their nature are very peaceful and peace loving, so it is not a surprise that many initiative have already sprung up with the aim of promoting peace. With the slogan GHANA FIRST WE LOVE PEACE, the United Ghanaian Artistes for Peace (UGAP), featuring all the winners of the prestigious MUSIGA 2007 Awards and other leading Ghanaian artistes first worked very hard to produce a Peace Song entitled We Love Peace – which is gradually becoming a hit, and a video to match, which is currently being played on all TV stations in Ghana.

In addition, horticulturalists have bred grasses to make them more drought resistant, creating a perfect plant for a building owner in drier areas or who simply doesn’t want the hassle of constant upkeep.

Solar shingles still seem like too much work for your home? Companies have begun making solar silicon cells so thin they’re actually transparent. These cells can be worked into windows to generate energy while still letting light into your home. Christensen says the cells are currently being used primarily in atria windows, meaning the whole ceiling of your office building could be generating power while you work!

Even skylights are getting more high tech — light pipes are a new technology used to harvest natural light. The fixtures funnel sunlight from large, plastic bubbles on the roof, and channel it through highly reflective, broad pipes into buildings. Orion Energy Systems, which sells the Apollo Light Pipe, says the reflected natural light they produce provides enough illumination on most days to turn off other artificial lighting. However, if it’s shady, the Apollo model incorporates fluorescent light bulbs, which use a sensor to keep light shining in even during cloud cover.

The surface is highly reflective, keeping sunrays off instead of absorbing them, which keeps heat out. While the benefits are highest in warmer areas of the country, the white gravel is more resistant to the elements and effects of weathering, causing it to last longer then an average roof even in cold climates.

Christensen’s organization gives credit to the new popularity of metal roofs. While metal roofs are not a new technology, their benefits for sustainability are just now being marketed and their availability for an average homeowner has skyrocketed. The metal shingles are extremely easy to recycle, incredibly durable and are a preferred roofing material for homes utilizing rain-catching systems. Also, with the controversy surrounding the use of asphalt in traditional tiles, metal roofs are a truly sustainable way to build.

An aerial view of most urban areas shows swathes of asphalt, black tar and gravel-ballasted rooftops. Heat radiates off of the dark roofs, and water rushes over the hard, hopefully impermeable surfaces. Yet, there is a new trend that breaks up the monotony of common roofs: green rooftops. Long popular in Europe, green rooftops have begun to appeal to homeowners, businesses and even cities as an attractive way to promote environmentalism while solving the problems of conventional roofs. Green roofs supplement traditional vegetation without disrupting urban infrastructure — they take a neglected space and make it useful.

Green roofs last longer than conventional roofs, reduce energy costs with natural insulation, create peaceful retreats for people and animals, and absorb storm water, potentially lessening the need for complex and expensive drainage systems. On a wider scale, green roofs improve air quality and help reduce the Urban Heat Island Effect, a condition in which city and suburban developments absorb and trap heat. Anyone who has walked across a scalding parking lot on a hot, summer day has felt one effect of an Urban Heat Island.

The layers of a green roof must, like any roof, accommodate drainage and protect the building from the elements with a waterproof membrane. But they also must create a growing area and potentially provide support, irrigation and root protection barriers while staying as light as possible.

Two types of green roof exist: intensive and extensive. Intensive green roofs are essentially elevated parks. They can sustain shrubs, trees, walkways and benches with their complex structural support, irrigation, drainage and root protection layers. The foot or more of growing medium needed for an intensive green roof creates a load of 80-150 pounds (36-68 kilograms) per square foot. Extensive green roofs are relatively light at 15-50 pounds (7-23 kilograms) per square foot. They support hearty native ground cover that requires little maintenance. Extensive green roofs usually exist solely for their environmental benefits and don’t function as accessible rooftop gardens.

One of the most famous American green rooftops, Chicago’s City Hall, combines extensive, intensive, and the intermediary semi-intensive systems on one retrofitted roof. Under the Mayor’s direction, the City of Chicago’s Department of Environment City Hall pilot program kicked off a citywide push to support green rooftop systems with incentives and grants.

Green Roofs, From the Ground Up

As I’ve previously noted, green roofs are thriving, with 2.4 million square feet of green roof planted between 2006 and 2007. But with this growing interest in green roofs has sprung the myth that they’re simple, DIY projects.

Not so, cautions Marni Horwitz, a green roof specialist in New York City. Last week, I visited her at a green roof she installed at the Wild Project, an arts venue on the Lower East Side of New York. There, she gave me a ground-up lesson in green roofing—and why you can’t go it alone:

All green roofs require the same first step: hire a structural engineer to evaluate how much additional weight the roof can support. From this, you can determine how much soil to use and what kinds of plants will flourish. The roof at The Wild Project has a 40 pounds per square foot capacity. Marni opted to use 4 inches of soil at 25 pounds per square foot, enough for sedum, a fast-spreading plant with small roots that is widely used by green roofers, but not for most food-producing plants.

Green roofs are built in layers, which you can either put down yourself or order in modular form. For this roof, Marni installed a modular system by ELT Easy Green, a Canadian company. The first layer is a waterproof membrane, which sits flat against the roof deck. On top of this, there’s a root barrier, a synthetic fabric that prevents roots from penetrating the membrane.  Next comes a drainage board, whose egg-crate shape stores water in cups—a reserve that nourishes roots during drought. Excess water, which adds weight to the roof and can over-saturate the soil, escapes through holes in the bottom. The last layer is a bioblanket, a mixture of organic and synthetic fabrics that retains the drainage board’s moisture, and prevents soil from running off the roof. Marni also recommends green roof systems by G-Sky and LiveRoof.

Marni ordered soil from Rooflite, a brand she likes for its nutrient- and compost-rich blend. Marni also recommended GaiaSoil, which is made of 80 percent recycled Styrofoam, which is light enough for five inches per square foot on a roof with a 10-pounds per square foot loading capacity.

2002年，科學家在聖安德魯斯大學和格拉斯哥大學在蘇格蘭了就80個大學生做了以下實驗，其中一半的人就性別和體重的差異 分別喝下一至四份“溫和(中等)”量的酒，。另一半的對照組相比，滴酒不沾 保持清醒。科學家們展示異性照片給這些學生看。在所有情況下-不分男女-實驗組（醉酒組）對圖中人物是否具有吸引力的評價都比對照組 (清醒組) 平均高出百分之二十五。

天文學家和業餘觀星家已經觀看此一罕見的天文現象一陣子了。

木星和金星同時出現在星空。距離之近，僅只有兩度之距。觀星人將能很幸運的看到這兩個行星的親蜜行止。在這段時間裡，彎月將遮掩金星，如果你在日落時分經由望遠鏡看月亮，您將看到一個月球遮掩金星的月掩星現象，好似在月球經過它時，這個星球會消失在黑暗境地裡。

漢姆思的話: 直到一月初, 木星和金星都會同時出現在星空。由於雙雙接近地球, 行星的反射光宛如星子們一般明亮。這些日子裡, 在上弦月劃過黑夜時, 星星月亮彷彿頑童般, 時而扮起笑臉。過了半夜 又扮起傷心、倒掛的臉來。隨著月亮的圓缺, 我期待著星空裡的越來越高興的臉轉為驚訝的臉(一夜裡倒看正看都驚訝的樣子), 再轉為調皮的哭喪的臉、倒掛的笑臉。
